Planning a road trip through Armenia? The Pagan Temple of Garni is a must-see stop on your itinerary. Built in the 1st century AD and dedicated to Mihr, the sun god also known as Mithra, it is considered the only surviving monument of the Hellenistic period in the entire region. A well-paved road leads from Yerevan to the village of Garni, just 28 kilometers away. The drive takes around 40 minutes.
Naniko Rent a Car followers on social media often ask us to share more of Armenia’s hidden and iconic places, so our team set out to capture the beauty of this historic site. For the trip, we chose a comfortable Nissan Rogue. However, you can rent any car in Yerevan from Naniko. The road is in good condition, and any car can handle this route.
The Garni Fortress was founded in 77 AD by order of King Tiridates I. The ancient Roman historian Tacitus mentioned it in his writings, and it was later described by the prominent Armenian chronicler Movses Khorenatsi.
The temple itself was built in an elegant Greco-Roman style, combining elements of Greek and Roman architecture. Unfortunately, a powerful earthquake in 1679 almost completely destroyed this ancient masterpiece. Centuries later, between 1966 and 1975, Soviet restoration specialists undertook an extraordinary project, painstakingly rebuilding the temple from its original stone fragments.
Key facts: The temple is surrounded by 24 imposing Ionic columns, symbolizing the 24 hours of the day. Secrets of the past: A statue of the god Mihr stood deep inside the sanctuary, elevated on an altar so that people coming to worship could see it from the street outside. At a certain time of day, sunlight entered through an opening in the roof, reflected off the polished stone above the entrance, and then bounced off the mirror-like surface of water or oil on the floor. At that moment, the statue was illuminated by a brilliant, divine light, dazzling those who had come to worship.
The ancient bathhouse stands a short distance from the temple. Built in the Roman style, this five-room complex included an entrance and changing room, bathing rooms with cold, warm, and hot water, and a furnace room.
The main attraction in the entrance hall is a unique mosaic floor made of small, colorful stones collected from the gorge of the nearby Azat River.
The story behind the mosaic: It depicts the sea deities Oceanus and Tethys, surrounded by Nereids, centaurs, and fish. At its center is a mysterious Greek inscription: “ΜΗΔΕΝ ΛΑΒΟΝΤΕΣ ΗΡΓΑΣΑΜΕΘΑ,” which translates as “We worked without receiving anything in return.” Historians still debate whether these words were a veiled complaint by the craftsmen or a tribute to the king. Today, the original mosaic is protected inside a specially built glass pavilion.
Garni has a special atmosphere at any time of year. Our team visited in autumn, so you will see plenty of greenery and soft sunshine in our footage. But we can assure you that winter is just as impressive. When the mountains are covered in a blanket of snow, the views of the ancient temple look truly cinematic.
The entire Naniko team was amazed by the scale of the complex. Standing beside an ancient temple that has witnessed the passage of different eras and civilizations is an unforgettable experience. There were plenty of people around, both tourists and locals, but there was still enough space and inspiration for everyone. This is definitely a place you will want to visit again and again.
