When Long-Term Rental, Operational Leasing or Buying a Car Makes Sense

Since most people moving to Armenia settle in Yerevan, renting a car for a month can be a sensible option. Others prefer operational leasing as a long-term solution, while some choose to buy a car. Let’s look at each option in turn.

Long-term or monthly car rental means renting a car for 30 days or several months. This type of rental is arranged individually at a reduced rate with monthly payments. Depending on the rental period and the terms of the agreement, it may include standard insurance or full coverage.

Operational leasing is a type of long-term vehicle rental that allows you to use a car for years without owning it. The main advantage is that the rental company takes care of the vehicle’s maintenance costs. If necessary, the car can also be replaced with another vehicle of a suitable class without you having to spend time dealing with these issues yourself.

Is buying a car always worth it? If your budget allows it, buying a car is certainly an option. However, once you own a vehicle, all maintenance-related matters become your responsibility. You will have to find the right service center, arrange repairs and keep track of the car’s technical condition yourself.

Which of these three options makes the most sense depends on your circumstances, but it is worth giving the decision some thought before choosing.

Why Do Car Class and Type Matter When Renting During a Relocation?

You may have noticed that we specifically mentioned C, B and D classes above, as they are well suited to city driving. At the same time, Armenia is a mountainous country, and people living here often take trips outside the city. C-class is probably the most versatile option for living in Yerevan. It is compact and maneuverable enough for city traffic and parking, while still being perfectly suitable for trips outside the capital. A C-class car can easily take you to places such as Lake Sevan and still be just as practical for everyday driving in the city.

B-class is a good choice if compact size and fuel efficiency are the main priorities. A car in this class is well suited to everyday city driving and trips to nearby destinations, such as Tsaghkadzor. For regular travel around Armenia, this class is sufficient for most routes.

D-class is a suitable option for longer trips and more time on the road. It works well for routes such as Yerevan to Dilijan and other intercity journeys where both driving time and distance are greater than on a typical city trip.

All three classes handle city and intercity travel well, but they should not be pushed beyond what they are designed for. If, as an experienced driver, you can see that a particular road may be too difficult for the vehicle or that there is a risk of getting stuck, it is better to turn around and take another route or find a detour. For difficult roads and sections where higher ground clearance and four-wheel drive are genuinely required, it is better to choose the appropriate type of vehicle in advance.
